For this project, I had to create an illustration for a science/historical magazine on the subject of the Western myth where male sailors were afraid to embark with females aboard ships since they were believed to cast bad luck. The guidelines for this project clearly expressed a desire to link the historical nature of the subject with a modern outlook on the proofs of such behaviour. Also, it needed to display some level of realistic scenery. In the illustration, I visited these two ideas by traditionally painting a scene where a female sailor is sitting amongst men while heading for a medium size ship and by using an old style typeface for the editorial, but I also used a modern puzzle with geometric shapes suggesting the unravelling of history with vivid colour to create an anachronistic contrast between the two eras.
